Appfire launches BigPicture Advanced for Jira users
Wed, 5th Aug 2026 (Today)
Appfire has launched BigPicture Advanced for Jira, adding Strategic Portfolio Management features to its existing BigPicture product.
The new edition is aimed at larger organisations that use Jira to manage delivery work but want portfolio planning, budgeting and prioritisation in the same environment.
BigPicture Advanced builds on BigPicture's project and portfolio management capabilities. It brings strategic planning, financial governance, initiative ranking and portfolio reporting into Jira, where many software and business teams already track work.
For companies managing multiple teams, programmes and portfolios, the challenge is often not a lack of planning tools but the gap between executive priorities and day-to-day delivery data. BigPicture Advanced is intended to link strategic goals and investment decisions more directly to operational progress.
What changes
New tools let users define strategic goals and objectives and key results, connect them to Jira work items and track progress against business outcomes. The product also adds budget and spending oversight across portfolios and initiatives, along with reporting on financial trends.
Users can rank competing initiatives using established prioritisation methods including Reach, Impact, Confidence and Effort, known as RICE, and Weighted Shortest Job First, or WSJF. The reporting layer is designed to give senior leaders a view of portfolio health, delivery progress and risk exposure.
These features sit on top of BigPicture's existing functions, including Gantt chart planning, resource and capacity management, risk management and support for agile, waterfall and hybrid approaches to work management.
Appfire has structured BigPicture as a single application in the Atlassian Marketplace with Standard and Advanced editions. That means customers using the standard version for project and portfolio management can move to the higher tier as planning and reporting needs become more complex.
Jira focus
The launch reflects continued demand for governance and planning tools built around software and workflow platforms already embedded across large organisations. Jira, originally centred on software development teams, is now used more widely by programme offices and business functions, creating an opening for suppliers that want to add portfolio oversight without forcing customers to adopt a separate system.
Appfire is one of the larger vendors in the Atlassian ecosystem and serves more than 25,000 companies, including more than 55% of the Fortune 500, across planning, automation, operations and governance use cases tied to platforms such as Atlassian, Salesforce and Microsoft.
The move places BigPicture more directly in the Strategic Portfolio Management market, where organisations are looking for ways to connect planning, funding and execution. That segment has drawn attention as companies face tighter scrutiny over technology spending and want clearer evidence that portfolio choices are producing measurable outcomes.
A key part of Appfire's argument is that strategy decisions often lose clarity once work moves into delivery systems. BigPicture Advanced is designed to reduce that disconnect by keeping strategic and financial context close to execution data inside Jira.
Ed Frederici, Chief Technology Officer at Appfire, outlined that position in the launch announcement. "Organisations can make sound strategic decisions within teams, but without a link to delivery data, they miss their ultimate goals," he said.
He added: "BigPicture Advanced closes that gap by giving leaders a transparent connection between business priorities, investment decisions, and delivery outcomes. This launch reflects our commitment to innovation and continuing to deliver broader enterprise solutions that enable customers to purchase, adopt, and scale as their needs evolve."
