Cainiao opens US-Mexico lane, boosts Japan & Korea tech
Cainiao has launched a new cross-border logistics lane between the United States and Mexico and is increasing investment in logistics technology in Japan and South Korea as part of a wider global expansion.
The company has begun an Americas global-to-global, or G2G, service that supports parcel flows between countries across the region. The first lane runs from the US to Mexico and focuses on the most active eCommerce markets in the US West. Cainiao said the network reaches 99% of Mexico and targets one of the region's busiest cross-border eCommerce corridors.
The group is pricing the new service at around 60% of the current market average for US-Mexico parcel delivery. It is aiming at platforms and sellers that ship across the border and face relatively high logistics costs. Cainiao said the lower pricing addresses what it sees as a long-standing cost barrier for cross-border parcels on the route.
The launch places Cainiao among the earliest China-based global logistics companies to operate G2G services in Asia, Europe and the Americas. The company has expanded from its original base in China into multiple cross-border delivery lanes as eCommerce volumes have risen.
The new Americas lane uses Cainiao's self-operated networks in both the US and Mexico rather than a fully outsourced model. The company controls operations at key logistics nodes including sorting, line-haul transfer and last-mile delivery. Cainiao said that this structure increases stability and transparency along the route and improves end-to-end management of parcels.
The focus on self-operated infrastructure contrasts with some cross-border logistics models that lean more heavily on third-party partners. Cainiao said it views direct control of core operations as a way to manage service quality and support future adjustments in routing and product design.
Tech push in North Asia
Alongside the Americas launch, Cainiao is expanding its logistics technology activities in Japan and South Korea. The company has set up a dedicated logistics technology office in Japan. It is also building local delivery and after-sales structures in the market. These investments support technology deployments for clients and ongoing operations once systems are in place.
The group is targeting logistics automation and software projects with retailers and logistics providers in both mature and emerging markets. It is positioning its technologies around artificial intelligence and so-called scenario-based operations that adapt warehouse and delivery processes to specific client workflows.
Bi Jianghua, Vice President of Cainiao and General Manager of Cainiao Logistics Technology, said Japan is at an inflection point for logistics systems investment. "Japan's FMCG retail sector is entering a peak cycle of logistics equipment upgrades. While automation in Japan is already mature, Cainiao's strengths in AI-driven innovation and scenario-based operations expertise position us to compete effectively," said Bi Jianghua, Vice President of Cainiao and General Manager of Cainiao Logistics Technology, Cainiao.
Bi said Cainiao expects a shift in global demand for logistics technology over the next two years as more retailers seek to upgrade networks and manage costs.
"We expect 2026 to be a breakout year for logistics technology. As we continue to deepen our business in China, we will also scale in both emerging markets and key mature markets-including Japan, South Korea, the U.S., and Europe-supported by an expanding global delivery and after-sales service network," said Bi.
Global network
Cainiao said its logistics technology products are now in use in 27 countries and regions. It has worked on more than 800 collaboration projects worldwide. These projects include warehouse automation, parcel sorting, software for logistics operations and related services.
The company's network spans over 200 countries and territories. Its global express division manages international express delivery along with nationwide express operations in several large markets, including China, Europe and the Americas. The group operates across three main areas. These are global express, global supply chain services and logistics technology solutions.
Cainiao has stated a long-term mission of achieving nationwide delivery within 24 hours in key markets and worldwide delivery within 72 hours. The company said it views cross-border lanes such as the new US-Mexico route, along with technology deployment in markets like Japan and South Korea, as steps in the direction of this target.
