Varo Bank has introduced fee-free in-store cash deposits at more than 2,000 Kroger Family stores across the United States using Green Dot's network and checkout technology.

The rollout lets Varo customers add cash to their accounts at customer service desks and checkout lanes in participating stores. Customers generate a barcode in the Varo app, and a cashier scans it to complete the deposit.

The option is available nationwide and removes the USD $4.95 retail service fee customers would otherwise pay for this type of transaction. Traditional swipe-based debit card cash loads will still carry the standard charge.

The launch is being run as a four-week pilot programme. It expands Varo's existing retail cash-load network and gives the digital bank a larger physical touchpoint for customers who still use cash in everyday spending.

Although Varo operates as an all-digital consumer bank, the move addresses a persistent issue for app-based banking groups in the US: giving customers practical ways to deposit cash without visiting a branch. By placing the service in supermarket checkout lanes, the bank ties a routine banking task to a regular shopping trip.

Green Dot provides the underlying infrastructure through its embedded finance platform and money-processing network. Its barcode scanning tool lets customers create a unique code in the Varo app that retail staff can use to load funds into the account.

For Varo, the arrangement adds to a strategy aimed at serving consumers who want digital banking services but still need occasional cash access. Many customers of branchless banks rely on external retail networks for deposits, withdrawals, and other over-the-counter functions.

The partnership also gives Green Dot another example of how financial services providers without branch networks are using its retail and transaction network. Green Dot says its broader network includes more than 90,000 retail distribution and cash-access locations across the country.

In comments on the launch, executives at both companies focused on reducing friction and cost for customers making cash deposits.

"Nobody should have to pay a fee just to deposit their own money," said Gavin Michael, Chief Executive Officer, Varo Bank. "Now that Varo customers can add cash fee-free at stores nationwide, they can take care of their banking right in the grocery line. With this new offering, we are making it as simple as possible for our customers to manage their cash where they already shop."

Green Dot described the arrangement as a way to move a banking function into everyday retail activity.

"Adding cash to your bank account should be as simple as buying groceries," said Renata Caine, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Embedded Finance, Green Dot. "Our money processing technology brings Varo's fee-free digital cash add capabilities straight to checkout lanes nationwide, making everyday money management that much easier."

Varo describes itself as the first all-digital nationally chartered consumer bank in the US. The company offers products spanning spending, savings, and credit-building, and has positioned itself around customers seeking lower-cost alternatives to traditional banking services.

The move highlights how digital banks are trying to bridge the gap between app-led services and cash-based consumer habits. While online account opening and mobile money management have become standard, access to low-cost cash deposits remains an operational hurdle for institutions without branches.

By adding fee-free deposits in grocery stores, Varo is testing whether convenience at the till can deepen customer use of its accounts while reducing one of the more visible costs associated with handling cash.
