Western Union has launched Stablecard with Rain, combining a digital wallet with a Visa-secured credit card in 37 markets.

The product brings stablecoin-based spending into Western Union's money transfer network for consumers who want to receive, hold and use US dollar value across borders.

Stablecard lets users receive funds into a digital wallet holding USDPT, a US dollar stablecoin issued by Anchorage Digital Bank on the Solana blockchain. The token is redeemable one-to-one for US dollars and fully backed by reserves.

The card is linked to the wallet, allowing customers to spend balances anywhere Visa is accepted, including online, in shops and at cash machines. Through the mobile app, users can also transfer USDPT to and from compatible digital asset wallets and exchanges.

The service is live in 37 markets, including countries where local currencies are prone to volatility and where demand for stablecoins is already visible. Western Union is targeting more than 60 markets by the end of the year.

The app also supports adding the card to Apple Pay and Google Pay. Customers can request and manage the card, receive Western Union transfers directly into the wallet and spend funds instantly through the linked Visa card.

Digital dollars

The move puts Western Union more directly into the growing market for stablecoin-based consumer payments. Stablecoins are already widely used in crypto trading and cross-border transfers, but turning them into a mainstream payment tool has proved more difficult.

For money transfer recipients, the offer is intended to provide an alternative to receiving and holding funds in local currencies that may lose value quickly. By keeping balances in a dollar-backed token, users can preserve a form of digital dollar value before deciding when and where to spend it.

Western Union operates in more than 200 countries and territories and supports nearly 130 currencies through bank accounts, digital wallets, cards and a large retail network. That reach gives the company an established customer base among migrant workers, remittance recipients and consumers moving money internationally.

Rain, the infrastructure partner behind the product, provides the underlying systems for both the wallet and card. It is a principal member of both Visa and Mastercard and issues payment cards accepted at more than 175 million merchant locations in over 200 countries and territories.

Strategic shift

The product also reflects a broader shift among payments and remittance companies as they explore ways to use blockchain-based assets without exposing consumers to the complexity often associated with crypto markets. Western Union is presenting it as a consumer payments tool rather than a trading or investment service.

A key part of the proposition is that users do not need separate processes for receiving money, storing value and spending it. Instead, those functions sit within one app, with the wallet and card tied together.

Devin McGranahan outlined Western Union's rationale for the launch.

"Stablecard represents the next step in making global financial services more accessible to our customers," said Devin McGranahan, President and Chief Executive Officer, Western Union. "By combining the stability of a dollar-backed digital asset with the scale of Western Union's global network and Visa's acceptance footprint, we're giving consumers a new way to hold value, move money and spend confidently across borders."

Rain's Chief Executive Officer also pointed to the aim of removing technical friction for users.

"Western Union is putting stablecoin efficiency in the hands of people who have never thought about onchain money and never need to. With Rain's enterprise infrastructure underneath both the wallet and card, users enjoy a modern experience that just works with all of the compliance and protections built in," said Farooq Malik, Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder, Rain.

The launch gives Western Union a new product line that extends beyond person-to-person remittances into wallet-based spending and value storage. It also signals how incumbent money transfer groups are adapting as stablecoins move from specialist digital asset use cases toward everyday consumer payments.

USDPT, the token used in the wallet, sits at the centre of that effort as the stored-value mechanism, while Visa acceptance provides the bridge to ordinary retail payments. Stablecard is now available through Apple's App Store and Google Play in supported markets.
