Xero opens Vancouver AI hub to boost North America

Tue, 28th Apr 2026 (Today)

Xero has opened a North American Product and Tech Hub in Vancouver, expanding its engineering presence in Canada.

The new hub will focus on AI development and Xero's core accounting products. It will be anchored by the Accounting Engine team and will also work on integrations with Anthropic and other AI companies.

Xero said the new base forms part of its wider network of product and engineering teams and will support global product and technology work as it serves more than 4.5 million subscribers across more than 180 countries.

The move adds to Xero's existing presence in Canada, where it already has an office in Toronto. The company entered the Canadian market in 2019 and later expanded local operations through the acquisitions of Hubdoc and TaxCycle.

Vancouver's strength as a technology labour market was a factor in the decision. Xero cited data showing that 71% of software engineers in the city work at technology companies, compared with 70% in San Francisco and 69% in Calgary.

Canada base

The Vancouver hub gives Xero a larger engineering foothold in North America at a time when software companies are increasing investment in AI tools and infrastructure. The focus on the Accounting Engine team also points to continued work on the company's main accounting software, rather than on AI projects alone.

The announcement also underlines Canada's importance in Xero's international footprint. While the company is best known in Australia, New Zealand and the UK, it has been building its North American operations through product development teams as well as customer-facing offices.

Rick Carragher, Xero's chief technology officer, said the Vancouver operation would play a central role in the company's product work.

"Xero is the go-to financial operating system for small businesses and their advisors for the AI era. By establishing Vancouver as our North America Product & Tech Hub, we're inviting top engineering talent to help us redefine how businesses operate and grow in the era of AI-powered finance," Carragher said.

He added that the city's location and workforce shaped the choice.

"Vancouver sits at a unique intersection of high-calibre talent and global connectivity, making it an obvious choice as we continue to expand our products and drive innovation for small businesses around the world," he said.

Xero said the Vancouver hub would operate as a specialised cross-functional centre within its wider organisation, placing the city alongside other Xero product and technology teams as the business continues to develop accounting software and related services for small businesses and their advisers.

Xero has long positioned itself as a software provider for smaller companies, offering accounting, payroll and payments tools on a single platform. Placing the Accounting Engine team at the centre of the Vancouver site suggests the Canadian base will contribute directly to the software functions at the heart of that offering.

The AI element is also notable because Xero specifically identified integrations with Anthropic among the work tied to the new hub. That suggests the Vancouver team will help bring external AI models into Xero's products as software companies compete to add generative AI features to finance and administration tools.

For Vancouver, the investment adds another international software employer to a market that has attracted both domestic and foreign technology companies. Xero said the city's concentration of software engineers helped it stand out among North American hubs.

Built on 20 years of technology development, Xero said it is trusted by more than 4.5 million subscribers in more than 180 countries.
