Affirm is now available to Canadian shoppers at Crate & Barrel, Crate & Barrel Kids and CB2, and is also being offered across the retailers' US operations.

Under the arrangement, eligible customers can use Affirm online and in stores across the three brands, choosing to pay in biweekly or monthly instalments. Plans start at 0% APR, according to the companies.

The move expands a payment option retailers have increasingly used to attract shoppers making larger discretionary purchases, particularly in categories such as furniture and homewares, where basket sizes can run into the hundreds or thousands of dollars. It also gives Crate & Barrel Holdings another tool as consumers weigh home-related spending against tighter household budgets.

Customers will be shown the total amount they will pay before completing a transaction, and Affirm does not charge late fees, hidden fees or compound interest, according to the company.

Home purchases

The partnership covers Crate & Barrel, Crate & Barrel Kids and CB2, which sit within Crate & Barrel Holdings' home-furnishing portfolio. The group operates more than 100 Crate & Barrel, CB2 and Hudson Grace stores and websites across the US and Canada, and says more than 200 million customers visit them each year.

For home retailers, payment flexibility can be especially relevant for shoppers buying bigger-ticket items tied to life events such as moving house, furnishing a nursery or replacing long-term household goods. Those transactions tend to be less frequent than everyday purchases, making financing options more prominent at checkout.

Crate & Barrel Holdings said the partnership is intended to give shoppers more control over how purchases fit into their broader plans. Adding in-store and online access in both the US and Canada suggests the retailer is rolling out the offering broadly rather than testing it in a limited channel.

Crate & Barrel Holdings joins a merchant network of more than 570,000 active partners, according to Affirm. That network includes businesses in travel, fashion, resale and ticketing, reflecting how buy-now-pay-later providers have sought to move beyond fashion and electronics into a wider range of consumer categories.

Retail strategy

The home-furnishings sector has faced uneven demand in recent years as consumers adjusted spending after a period of elevated interest in home improvement and interiors. Retailers have responded by sharpening promotions, refining product mixes and adding more payment options to reduce friction at the point of sale.

Buy-now-pay-later products have become a common part of that effort, though the model has also drawn scrutiny from regulators and consumer advocates over affordability and disclosure. Providers argue that fixed-payment plans with clear upfront terms can offer a more predictable alternative to revolving credit for some consumers.

Crate & Barrel Holdings framed the partnership around customer confidence at the point of purchase.

"Helping our customers feel confident in their purchasing decisions is central to everything we do," said Janet Hayes, President and Chief Executive Officer, Crate & Barrel Holdings. "Partnering with Affirm allows us to deliver the flexibility and control they deserve at every step of their journey."

Affirm linked the agreement to household budgeting and the practical decisions behind larger purchases.

"A thoughtful purchase doesn't stop at deciding what to buy," said Pat Suh, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, Global Markets at Affirm. "People think about how it fits with everything else going on in their lives and their budget. How they pay is part of figuring out what works, and Affirm gives Crate & Barrel Holdings customers more choice in that decision."

The Canadian rollout is notable because Affirm specifically highlighted availability for shoppers in that market across the Crate & Barrel, Crate & Barrel Kids and CB2 brands. In Canada, rates range from 0% to 31.99% APR, subject to provincial regulations and eligibility checks, with terms depending on the purchase amount and merchant.

That means the offer will not be uniform for every shopper or transaction, even though the headline proposition centres on instalment payments and upfront disclosure. For retailers, however, the main commercial appeal lies in giving customers another way to complete purchases that might otherwise be delayed or reconsidered.
