Rockwell Automation adds AI visual inspection to Plex QMS

Rockwell Automation has integrated Plex QMS with FactoryTalk Analytics VisionAI, adding AI-based visual inspection to quality management workflows.
The integration uses an API connection between Plex Quality Management System and FactoryTalk Analytics VisionAI. The combined setup can work with new and existing camera systems and feed inspection results into Plex for traceability, product serialisation and inspection records, Rockwell said.
Rockwell is positioning the announcement as part of a broader expansion of artificial intelligence across its manufacturing software portfolio. That effort spans cloud-based manufacturing execution systems, edge AI and digital twins, along with newer tools inside Plex products.
Manufacturers have long relied on manual or rules-based visual inspection on production lines. Rockwell said traditional visual inspection is only 80% effective and often does not retain a history of inspections, creating gaps in defect detection and product traceability.
By linking image-based inspection with quality workflows, Rockwell aims to help manufacturers capture anomalies within a formal quality system rather than treat them as isolated shop-floor events. The integration is designed to move image results directly into quality processes for tracking defects and maintaining records.
Rockwell also linked the launch to a wider shift in factory software. In its Scaling MES Across the Enterprise report, the company said 42% of manufacturing processes are expected to become AI-supported within the next year.
That figure points to growing interest in applying AI not only to equipment monitoring and planning, but also to routine quality tasks that have traditionally depended on human review. Visual inspection has been an early target because many industrial settings require high volumes of repetitive checks.

"With predictive intelligence, manufacturers can shift from scripted automation to adaptable autonomy as systems learn, adjust and collaborate across software, hardware and workers."
The quality inspection integration is not the only AI feature Rockwell has added to Plex. Plex Connected Worker recently introduced an AI-powered authoring agent in its Digital Work Instructions suite that can turn CAD files and technical assets into structured instructions for frontline employees, according to the company.
Plex also includes an AI agent in its reporting and analytics functions. Rockwell said the tool provides dashboards based on operational data and allows users to query information in natural language to identify risks and predict issues.
Broader push
These additions suggest Rockwell is weaving AI into several layers of factory software, from production guidance and reporting to inspection and quality control. The strategy appears to centre on embedding AI into existing operational systems rather than offering it as a separate application.
The latest integration also highlights the role of interoperability in industrial software purchasing decisions. Plex QMS is built on an API-first architecture, which Rockwell said makes it easier to connect the quality system with inspection technology and other software already used in plants.
For manufacturers, one practical question is whether AI inspection can fit into established compliance and documentation routines. Recording inspection outcomes inside a quality management system may help address that concern by keeping a documented history tied to products and processes.
Rockwell said the setup can help detect anomalies and reduce defects. In sectors where traceability is tightly managed, such as automotive, food production and regulated manufacturing, linking inspection results to serialised records can also support investigations and audits.
