Thunes opens New York office to boost US expansion

Wed, 10th Jun 2026 (Today)

Thunes has opened a new office in New York City, expanding the global payments company's US presence.

The new hub in Union Square adds to Thunes' existing operations in San Francisco and Atlanta. It forms part of a broader US investment drive backed by the USD $150 million Series D funding round announced last year.

Thunes is seeking to strengthen its position in the American market as US-based businesses look for faster, more reliable ways to send money abroad. It targets demand from gig economy platforms, marketplaces, payment service providers, and financial institutions that need to make payouts to recipients overseas.

A central part of that strategy is its US regulatory structure. Thunes said it owns and operates its own licences across all US states and territories, with 50 Money Transmission Licences.

It argued that this direct licensing model gives it greater control over compliance and transaction processing in the US market. The New York base will also allow it to work more closely with customers and partners in one of the country's largest financial centres.

Beyond the US, Thunes said its network connects members to payment endpoints in more than 140 countries and across 90 currencies. The system reaches billions of bank accounts, mobile wallets, stablecoin wallets and cards through more than 220 payment methods.

Users of its network include Uber, Deliveroo, Grab and WeChat. Headquartered in Singapore, Thunes has also built a wider office footprint across cities in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa and North America.

US expansion

The New York opening comes as payment companies compete for a larger share of cross-border transactions from US businesses. Demand has grown as digital platforms expand internationally and seek faster settlement for workers, merchants and partners across multiple markets.

For firms serving the gig economy and online marketplaces, the ability to move smaller sums to large numbers of recipients in different countries has become increasingly important. That has increased pressure on providers to combine local regulatory permissions with a broad international reach.

Thunes said the New York office will also support hiring, particularly in business development. It is recruiting for roles linked to its expanding operations in the region.

Simon Nelson, Chief Commercial Officer at Thunes, said the opening was part of a broader push rather than a standalone move.

"The opening of our New York office is a pivotal moment for our team, but it is just one piece of a much larger picture. Our investment into the US market this year is a direct response to the massive demand from American businesses looking for faster, more transparent ways to move money globally. Positioning ourselves in Union Square, in the heart of the city and right next to many of our Members, we are ensuring that Thunes is better equipped to support the ambitions of our partners and drive innovation in a key strategic market," Nelson said.

The company also highlighted licensing as a key feature of its US model.

"What truly sets Thunes apart in the US is that we own and operate our licenses in every state. This total control over our regulatory footprint is a huge differentiator for us and guarantees the highest level of reliability and speed. Our growth in New York is a testament to the hard work of our global team and our commitment to building a world-class presence in the U.S. We are thrilled to welcome our new NYC-based Thunesters and are actively looking for top talent to join us in this new chapter," said Kyle Rosen, Head of Americas at Thunes.
